PetCo Pet Insurance
(Trupanion Pet Insurance)
Known for over 10 years as Vetinsurance in
Canada,
Trupanion pet
insurance is now available in the US. Highly recommended by
PetCo, they are also known as PetCo Pet Insurance.
Trupanion offers complete pet health
insurance coverage
for unexpected accidents or illnesses. Diagnostic tests, medications
and surgeries up to $20,000 are covered for hereditary and congenital
disorders.
No Fee Guide
Many insurance companies reimburse costs
based on fee schedules. Not so
with Trupanion. There are no incident or annual caps. Nor is your
payout reduced with complicated and restrictive fee guides. Petco Pet
Insurance covers 90 percent of the vet bill.
No Surprises
While some pet insurance companies may raise
your premiums for
submitting clams, Trupanion will not penalize you. Approximately 8% of
Petco Pet Insurance owners file a claim each month. Most of these are
multiple claims for illnesses which require ongoing treatment. You will
not be surprised with higher premiums if your animal requires multiple
costs for care.
This is especially comforting to know as
your pet ages
and may experience illness. As your pet becomes older, your premiums
will remain stable. Your rates will not increase due to your pet's
increasing age.
Premiums are set by the breed and age of
your pet at the time of
enrollment
and reflect the local cost of veterinary care.
Fast Processing
In a recent survey of 10,000 repeat claims,
9 out of 10 were processed
and paid in less than 24 hours. The industry standard is 3-4 weeks.
Policy Options
Their free quote area contains a slider
where you can see how your
deductible will affect your monthly premium. In my area, for a 2 year
old German Shepherd, the monthly premium is:
- $0 Deductible - $38.52
- $500 Deductible - $27.39
- $1,000 Deductible - $19.01
Coverage includes:
- Chronic or recurring conditions
- Congenital disorders
- Diagnostic tests
- Hereditary disorders
- Medications
- Surgeries
Not covered:
- Pre-existing conditions
- Routine care
- Veterinary exam fees
If you enroll your pet before
their
first birthday, hip
dysplasia coverage can be added up to 30 days after
the policy effective date.
Woof!
- You can use your vet, including emergency
and
referral specialists.
- Does not automatically exclude hereditary
and
congenital disorder as
pre-existing.
- 90% of your vet bill is covered - No
annual caps.
- Typically approves
and pays claims in less than 7 days.
- Pet ID Tag with policy number is
included.
Grrr...
- Lifetime Limit of $20,000 for meds,
surgeries and
tests for sickness or
injuries.
- If you have a working dog, activities
related to
breeding, guarding,
hunting, law enforcement or racing are not covered.
- Hip Dysplasia is only covered if your dog
is under
one year at
enrollment.
The Bottom Line
Your pet is covered when using any licensed
veterinarian, including
referral specialists and emergency clinics. For the best price, PetCo
Pet Insurance encourages enrolling your pet under one year. But the
premiums and benefits are still excellent even if you miss that cutoff.
Fast reimbursement for 90 percent of the vet
bill makes Trupanion a great choice.
